Genetic Framework Flags Safety Risks for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Drug
A genetics-first study published in the Journal of Translational Medicine proposes a way to flag potential safety risks for inflammatory bowel disease drugs before they reach large patient populations. Led by Xin Gao and Xiaofeng Guo of Shanxi Provincial People’s Hospital, with coauthors including Shaopeng Yang of Zhejiang Cancer Hospital and corresponding author Qi Zhang of Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute, the work focuses on 18 established or emerging IBD therapeutic target genes. Using protein- and gene-expression quantitative trait loci as proxies, researchers tested 76 prespecified safety outcomes from the FinnGen R13 biobank. They analyzed 1,824 of 1,900 planned tasks, addressing sparsity challenges when only one or a few genetic instruments exist per target.
