Hamilton calls Marshall medical debt video 'desperate'
Kansas Senate candidate Adam Hamilton called an opponent’s video about his medical-debt lawsuits “desperate,” escalating a dispute over how Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) handled overdue bills during his practice. Hamilton criticized a video in which Marshall said he occasionally turned overdue accounts to a collection agency “to keep the lights on,” and that his involvement ended once a case was outsourced. The New York Times reported in September that Marshall filed lawsuits against more than 700 former patients, including debts as low as $101, and that patients were arrested in 81 cases after missing court appearances, based on records reviewed by the outlet. Marshall disputed any arrests, while Hamilton said Marshall’s attorney filed the suits and that the senator influenced how aggressively they were pursued.
