Haunted by grief, Gaza's displaced still wait overseas for return
xCruzo Brief
Omar al-Hassayna fled Gaza for Cairo after an Israeli airstrike destroyed much of his extended family, and three years later he is still waiting to return. He is among more than 100,000 Gazans who left the enclave during the war triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel and who remain stranded overseas, according to Palestinian Authority figures. Hassayna continues to mourn relatives and destroyed homes while Israeli forces hold more than 60% of Gaza and conduct almost daily airstrikes. Hamas controls much of the populated areas, where Palestinians live in temporary shelters with what aid agencies describe as inadequate supplies. Israel has said its strikes target military sites while limiting harm to civilians.
