As cases of cyclosporiasis continue to rise across the U.S., questions are emerging about severity, including whether any deaths have occurred. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 4,173 confirmed cases as of July 21, with more than 7,400 additional cases needing analysis for domestically acquired infection. Another 767 cases were linked to illness contracted while traveling outside the United States in the 14 days before symptoms began. Investigations by the FDA, CDC, and state officials tied the outbreak to a California produce supplier, Taylor Farms, which issued a voluntary recall on July 17 of certain iceberg lettuce products from Taylor Farms de Mexico. In the reported outbreak, there have been 308 hospitalizations and zero deaths. Separately, officials are investigating a smaller second outbreak with at least 72 illnesses.
