Post-mastectomy tattoos help women cope and rebuild identity

A qualitative study published in Supportive Care in Cancer suggests that artistic mastectomy tattoos can help women cope after breast cancer treatment and rebuild a sense of identity. Led by Tsipi Hanalis-Miller of the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yaffo in Israel, the research interviewed 12 women from June 2023 to April 2024 who chose decorative tattoos over or around the surgical area. Ages ranged from 30 to 56 (mean 44.5). Eleven had breast reconstruction beforehand and one had a flat closure. The study distinguishes artistic tattoos from medical nipple-areola complex tattooing, emphasizing symbolic expression. Researchers interviewed only women who chose the artistic option.
