Radiotherapy Fails to Improve Survival in Limb Liposarcoma, Study Finds
A retrospective study from a major Chinese sarcoma center has questioned the long-held role of adjuvant radiotherapy after surgery for limb liposarcoma. The researchers followed 153 patients treated with limb-sparing resection at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine between January 2015 and April 2023, comparing outcomes for those who received adjuvant radiation versus those who did not. Because radiotherapy is typically given to higher-risk cases, the team used propensity score matching across 11 baseline characteristics. Before matching, overall survival and recurrence-free survival were worse in the radiotherapy group; after matching, differences persisted but were no longer statistically significant, including five-year recurrence-free survival of 64.8% versus 41.8%.
