Rare turtle found lifeless on Jersey beach gets all-clear, heads 1,500 miles for release
A loggerhead turtle known as “Crush,” found apparently lifeless on a Jersey beach on Jan. 19 after Storm Goretti, has been cleared to leave the U.K. and begin a 1,500-mile journey for release. BBC News reported that she was discovered on the shoreline in the aftermath of the storm and initially appeared lifeless, but treatment revealed malnourishment and cold-stunning, a hypothermia-like condition. Her initial care took place at New Era Veterinary Hospital in Jersey, and clinical director Peter Hawarth kept her at his family home for two weeks before transporting her by flight to Southampton. She was later moved to Weymouth Sea Life Centre for extended rehabilitation, including regular CT scans and weigh-ins. Now in quarantine and preparing for a flight to the Azores, she will undergo specialist monitoring before release. The species is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
