Swindon's Great Western Hospital opens new ward to boost bed numbers
Swindon's Great Western Hospital opens new ward to boost bed numbers focuses on a capacity response amid sustained pressure on hospital services. The Great Western Hospital (GWH) in Swindon, Wiltshire has opened a temporary medical short stay unit (MSSU) adding 20 beds. It is intended for patients with minor conditions who can be treated within 72 hours. The opening comes during the third heatwave in as many months, when the facility is again near full capacity, and follows the busiest winter on record that produced long emergency-care waits. Bed occupancy is currently estimated at about 98–100%, exceeding a safe operational threshold of 85%. A 2025 Care Quality Commission inspection previously found patients cared for in corridors for extended periods, while a more recent inspection rated the hospital as good overall.
