What's gone up even faster than gas or rent? The cost of caregiving
A new AARP study released Wednesday finds that family caregivers now spend an average of $11,508 out of pocket each year, about 60% more than five years ago. That figure represents roughly 31% of caregivers’ income on average and rises more than twice as fast as overall inflation, which the report measures at 24% via the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index. The study, based on responses from 2,538 family caregivers, points to food, housing and medical expenses as major drivers, alongside the growing complexity of care provided at home. It also notes a “double whammy” as many reduce working hours or leave jobs, cutting income while costs climb. The article cites caregiver Meghan Maher’s experience, including a steep drop after quitting her job.
