Young neurologists love the brain but battle broken systems, German study
A German study examining why young doctors choose neurology points to system problems rather than lack of interest. Published in BMC Medical Education, the exploratory, cross-sectional two-cohort survey compared medical students who had not yet committed to a specialty with neurology residents already working in departments. Researchers from the Technical University of Munich and multiple German university hospitals analyzed structured questionnaires plus open-ended questions. The response rates were 44% for 79 medical students and 32% for 56 residents. Across both cohorts, the specialty itself—its intellectual appeal and clinical fascination—was the top factor, followed by good teaching experiences. Workplace conditions ranked third, and the authors describe them as among the most troubling findings amid ongoing physician shortages in Germany.
