Cal Poly stuns Idaho in opener with long fourth-down touchdown

Cal Poly stunned Idaho in the season opener, winning 38-34 on a fourth-down touchdown with nine seconds remaining Friday night at Mustang Memorial Field in San Luis Obispo, California. Down the stretch, Anthony Grigsby Jr. threw up a prayer on fourth-and-8 from Idaho’s 34, and receiver Tayvion McCoy outmatched his defender for the go-ahead catch. Cal Poly led 14-3 in the second quarter, but Idaho rallied after halftime, tying early in the fourth. Joshua Wood connected with Ryan Jezioro for 65 yards and then hit Tony Harste for a 5-yard TD; after a 2-point conversion the score was 24-all. Idaho took its first lead on Harste’s 75-yard touchdown after a missed field goal and later scored a field goal with 1:03 left, but Cal Poly answered immediately to keep the Mustangs alive under first-year coach Tim Skipper. Grigsby finished 26-of-35 for 319 yards and four touchdowns; Wood was 18-of-25 for 363 with two TD passes.
