Cecil Calhoun still walks the course that shaped his legacy
xCruzo Brief
At the Country Club of Columbus in Columbus, Georgia, Cecil Calhoun—now 92—was back on the greens Monday, using a seat stick mostly as a walker as he watched play. A Columbus legend, Calhoun graduated from Columbus High School in 1952, played for the LSU men’s golf team and won a national championship in 1955, later serving his country as a U.S. Air Force colonel. This week, his home course hosted the 2026 Haskins Intercollegiate for the first time. Calhoun has lived near the course for years and has seen golfers such as Jack Nicklaus, including a story about Nicklaus hitting repeatedly from 70 yards out.
