Climate change mitigation project discusses 'science-based solutions' for aquaculture

A climate change mitigation project known as Occam met in Shetland to discuss “science-based solutions” aimed at reducing environmental impacts from aquaculture. Partners including Shetland Seafood gathered in Lerwick for two days, bringing industry, scientists and policy-makers together as part of the four-year effort that is working toward an 18-month milestone. Project manager Freya Robinson said the meeting in a working fishing and aquaculture community helped frame discussions in context, and included opportunities to experience local hospitality. Sessions covered topics such as carp farming in Poland, rainbow trout in Spain, and salmon in the Faroe Islands and Iceland. The project also focuses on economic viability and climate-resilient decisions across the aquaculture value chain, including earlier detection of harmful algal blooms that could affect shellfish in Scottish waters.
