Continuous round-the-world cruise comes to an end as Iran war spikes fuel costs
The Villa Vie Odyssey, a residential ship that had sailed continuously around the world for more than two years, ended its run in Cambodia after fuel-price shocks linked to the Iran war made the voyage financially unsustainable. Villa Vie Residences said the operator began cutting fuel consumption in late February, including slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port, but the measures weren’t enough to offset the “extraordinary increase” in costs. The company said it was suspending operations and working to arrange temporary living for residents, many of whom own cabins and stay onboard full-time. It also said monthly fuel costs per cabin rose from around $1,800 to as high as $8,000 in parts of Asia. Residents were reportedly told to disembark with less than a day’s notice.
