Drove a Chevy 1,000 Miles Hands Free. Here's How it Went

A 1,000-mile hands-free Chevy trek demonstrates how Super Cruise can extend hands-free driving on long trips. Launched in 2017, Super Cruise uses sensors, radars, cameras and GPS mapping to know current road conditions and vehicle location. It can steer, brake and accelerate automatically on roads where it is available, and it can change lanes or highways when permitted. A camera mounted on the steering column watches the driver to ensure attention, and the system warns well in advance if it must be handed back to the wheel. GM says nearly 600,000 miles (about 960,000 km) of roads are officially mapped for Super Cruise in North America, covering most major freeways and highways. The company notes about 1 billion hands-free miles have been driven with Super Cruise to date. The feature supports trailer towing up to 30 feet long and 8 feet wide, though it won’t perform automatic lane changes while towing. A 2,000-kilometer test portion of the mapped network includes the Trans Canada Highway, a route spanning the country from coast to coast.
