Harry Kane sends England into round of 16 after 2-1 win vs. DR Congo
Harry Kane sent England into the World Cup round of 16 after scoring two second-half goals to beat DR Congo 2-1 on Wednesday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Congo took a surprising halftime lead when Brian Cipenga finished in the seventh minute, but Kane leveled with a header after the break. The decisive strike came in the 86th minute when Kane placed his shot into the top corner. England will next face co-host Mexico in Mexico City on Sunday. Kane’s total reached five goals in this tournament and extended his record as England’s leading World Cup scorer to 13, with 84 caps for the national team overall. Anthony Gordon provided the assist for Kane’s 75th-minute goal. Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi made multiple stops, and England appealed for a penalty that was waved away by referee Adham Makhadmeh.
