Harry Kane sends England to the round of 16 of the World Cup after 2-1 win over Congo
Harry Kane sent England to the World Cup round of 16 after a 2-1 comeback win over Congo on Wednesday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. England erased Congo’s surprising lead before halftime, with Kane leveling the match via a header after Brian Cipenga had scored in the seventh minute. Kane then delivered the decisive goal in the 86th minute, firing into the top corner. The victory secures a spot in the knockout stage for England, which will play co-host Mexico in Mexico City on Sunday. Kane’s total reached five goals at this World Cup and extended his tournament-leading England record to 13 World Cup goals, with 84 goals for the national team overall. England had previously struggled when conceding first. Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi made key saves, while England’s appeals for a penalty were dismissed by referee Adham Makhadmeh.
