The Brisbane suburbs that are bus stop black holes

Hemmant, a suburb about 20 minutes from Brisbane’s CBD, has effectively been left behind in bus access. Despite buses making up two-thirds of Brisbane’s public transport trips, Hemmant is among more than a dozen mainland suburbs without any bus stops. The area has a train station, but reaching Wynnum Plaza—less than four kilometres away—typically requires driving, walking, or using the council’s hail-and-ride taxi service. The council’s personalized public transport option costs $1 and runs limited weekday hours, excluding many school holiday periods. Residents cited long walks, narrow streets, and difficulties for families on the school run. Hemmant’s population grew 21% to 2,886 by 2021.
