Yankees swept by Red Sox after blowing lead in extras as rally goes for naught in brutal loss

A late rally gave the Yankees a chance to finish a brutal weekend on a high note, but the Red Sox turned it into another defeat in extra innings to complete a four-game sweep at Fenway Park. Boston won 5-4 in the bottom of the 10th on Sunday night, using Jarren Duran’s walk-off single off Fernando Cruz. New York had taken the lead with two runs in the top of the 10th after its first advantage since Thursday, yet errors and Chapman’s collapse in the ninth helped swing momentum. Sonny Gray carried a no-hitter into the eighth, but Amed Rosario broke it up with a single. The Red Sox pitching dominated across the weekend, with Connelly Early, Payton Tolle, Jake Bennett and Gray combining for 26 ⅔ innings and allowing just three runs while striking out 28. The Yankees are now 48-35 and have dropped eight of 11 after their first four-game sweep by their rivals since 2018.
