Major UK supermarket makes change to deliveries this summer
Major UK supermarket Waitrose is extending its on-demand grocery deliveries this summer to serve football fans during the World Cup. The retailer will offer late-night delivery from more than 50 UK stores until midnight, and in some areas up to 24 hours a day, throughout the tournament. The move follows a 17% rise in orders during recent England and Scotland matches, alongside a 1,700% jump in searches for Waitrose’s No. 1 pizza and a 1,400% increase in searches for “World Cup crisps.” Deliveries will be handled via partners including Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat. Waitrose said supermarket opening hours won’t be extended and alcohol will not be available during late-night slots, with potential expansion if demand holds. Separately, multiple retailers recalled certain fruit products due to salmonella risk identified in testing by Prepworld.
