Off-grid creator shares real numbers behind cabin life, says self-reliance still needs a budget
An off-grid creator behind the YouTube channel My Self Reliance says the appeal of cabin life doesn’t eliminate costs—it makes budgeting more important. In a recent video, the creator argued that planning should start with actual financial records rather than estimates, advising viewers to collect bank statements, credit card statements and utility bills to identify spending patterns, including forgotten subscriptions and recurring charges. He pointed to a past attempt at wilderness living at age 21 on five acres with almost no income, where a $150 monthly mortgage and roughly $100 per year in property taxes were enough to derail the plan. The creator recommended listing every account and recurring expense, tracking changes in a journal or spreadsheet, and using that baseline to spot savings or confirm whether a move toward homesteading is realistic—emphasizing that “self-reliance” begins with a financial foundation.
