Stocks end wild July as Amazon soars, Apple sinks | Arkansas Democrat Gazette
U.S. stocks ended a volatile July higher on Friday, with Amazon surging and Apple sliding as rising oil prices intensified worries that inflation will stay elevated. The S&P 500 rose 0.7% after swinging between gains and losses, while the Dow added 276 points (0.5%) and the Nasdaq gained 1% after briefly wiping out an early 1.3% jump. Still, the month closed with the S&P 500 posting only a small loss overall. Amazon jumped 15.3% after profit more than tripled year over year and its cloud growth accelerated, alongside an increased investment forecast for AI. Apple fell 7.4% despite stronger-than-expected profit, as its revenue growth outlook missed expectations due to component supply constraints. Oil and inflation pressure also lifted Treasury yields.
