Stocks end wild July as Amazon soars, Apple sinks | Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
U.S. stocks rebounded on Friday to cap a jittery July as Amazon rallied sharply, Apple fell, and oil prices climbed, worsening concerns about inflation staying high. The S&P 500 gained 0.7% after moving between gains and losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose about 276 points (0.5%), while the Nasdaq added 1% after an early 1.3% jump temporarily disappeared. For the week, Friday’s rise marked the S&P 500’s first winning week in three, but July still ended with a slight monthly loss. Amazon jumped 15.3% after quarterly profit more than tripled year over year, aided by faster cloud computing growth and an increased investment outlook tied to AI. Chip-related stocks swung, while Apple dropped 7.4% due to a revenue growth forecast missing expectations. Brent settled at $87.93 amid war-with-Iran supply uncertainty.
