Think there'll be no age pension when you retire? Think again

Australia’s Treasury’s 2026 Intergenerational Report challenges the idea that the age pension will vanish by the time today’s workers retire. The report projects the number of Australians aged 67 and over will nearly double to about 9 million by 2066. It also predicts that, while fewer older people are expected to receive government income support than today, 52% of older Australians will still receive a pension or other income support payment, down from 66% last year. The author argues that the bigger shift is that more people will retire with meaningful superannuation balances, changing how pension spending develops.
