Fire Damages Historic Dragon Coaster at New York Park Featured in 'Big'

An electrical fire damaged the historic Dragon Coaster at Rye Playland in Westchester County over the weekend, officials said. Flames erupted from part of the wooden coaster at around 8:50 p.m. Saturday, after the waterfront, county-owned park had already closed for the season. No injuries were reported, and authorities said the blaze caused only minimal damage. Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins thanked fans for their concern and praised the Rye Fire Department for responding quickly. The ride, which opened 97 years ago and is Playland’s signature attraction, is expected to be repaired during the fall off-season. The incident comes amid past disputes involving the county and private operators, which kept the coaster closed through the 2025 season.
