Laos' inflation rate stands at 9 pct in May

Laos posted a 9 percent inflation rate for May, a slight easing from April’s 10.2 percent as reported by the Lao Statistics Bureau. The slowdown is attributed mainly to lower domestic fuel prices and a stable exchange rate. The goods and services category rose the most, by 28 percent, while housing, water, electricity and gas surged 20.4 percent, and the communications and transport sector increased 15.5 percent. The data, released on May 27, reflects moderating price pressures amid ongoing domestic supply factors and currency stability, offering a nuanced view of consumer costs across Lao markets.

Analysts note that energy and housing-related costs continue to drive inflation, with services and non-food items also contributing, underscoring the importance of monitoring policy responses in Laos as prices adjust through mid-year.
