South Korea football chief to quit after 'controversies, criticisms'

Chung Mong-gyu, president of South Korea’s Korea Football Association, said Friday that he will resign after the World Cup, citing a personal lack of virtue amid fierce criticism of his 13-year tenure. He is serving a fourth term and won it in February with an 85.6 percent approval. Controversies cited include pushing to pardon players banned for life for match-fixing and bypassing standard coaching hires when appointing Jurgen Klinsmann in 2023. Klinsmann was dismissed after 12 months, followed by two interim coaches, amplifying criticism of Chung. He plans to formally step down after the World Cup final on July 19.
