Scotland-based designer reimagines Scottish tartan through Yoruba Aso Oke

A Scotland-based designer reimagines Scottish tartan through Yoruba Aso Oke by launching Heritage Confluence, a debut collection that blends two textile traditions through shared history and technique. Tobilola Tonueyi, a Nigerian fashion designer and Creative Director of Teeday Honts Couture, unveiled the range in Scotland using Yoruba Aso Oke weaving methods to recreate tartan checks directly on the loom. The resulting fabric looks like classic Scottish tartan at first glance, but reveals raised texture and the handwoven structure typical of Aso Oke on closer inspection. Tonueyi said the collection was designed as a conversation between cultures, not an attempt to replace or visually merge traditions. The line includes relaxed trousers, tailored waistcoats and coordinated pieces with minimalist silhouettes, and a featured waistcoat highlights geometric precision from the tartan-inspired weave. The launch drew representatives from OneRen, Paisley Museum, Miss Africa Scotland and fashion schools across Glasgow.
