The week Gainesville forgot about football: Inside the terror that gripped Florida during the 1990 murders

August 1990 snapped Gainesville back into focus for reasons it never truly let go. Former UF students and alumni recalled Danny Rolling—also known as the “Gainesville Ripper”—who killed five students over three nights in the final stretch before Labor Day and about two weeks before the start of the 1990 football season. Rolling was later arrested, pled guilty to the murders, received a death sentence, and died by lethal injection in 2006. Alumni described a campus-wide sense of fear with nightly coverage and no social media, including reports that people guarded windows and doubted even strangers in stores. The arrival of Steve Spurrier as head coach is framed as a later reset for the community.
