Alvin and the Chipmunks' Movie in the Works for Planned 2028 Release
Alvin and the Chipmunks’ movie is moving into a new development cycle, with plans for a planned 2028 theatrical release tied to the franchise’s 70th anniversary. Big Shot Pictures said it closed a joint venture with Bagdasarian Productions, which owns the Alvin and the Chipmunks property. Big Shot will take a 25% ownership stake and develop new projects, including a feature film in development targeted for late 2028, though no distributor has been named. The announcement also opens the door to digital short-form content for YouTube and other platforms, alongside music opportunities. Bagdasarian Productions is led by Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and Janice Karman, who have overseen the franchise since the 1970s. Created in 1958, the series centers on Alvin, Simon and Theodore and has generated multiple TV series and films, with the movies earning nearly $1.5 billion at the global box office. Brian Robbins, founder of Big Shot, launched earlier this year and secured a first-look theatrical distribution deal with Sony.
