Binance suspends withdrawals after crypto hackers steal $6.3 Billion
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, said Thursday it halted withdrawals after hackers stole more than $6 billion in digital coins, in what appears to be the biggest crypto heist on record. The exchange temporarily stopped all deposits and withdrawals and said customers would be made whole, estimating losses at about $6.3 billion. Binance also coordinated with other firms to freeze roughly $3 billion in assets linked to the hack. Crypto research firm TRM Labs attributed the attack to North Korea’s elite hacking unit with “high confidence,” estimating $2.4 billion moved beyond any issuer’s reach. Binance later said it found additional “points of breach,” called the incident a complex hack, began recovering some assets, and expected withdrawals within two days.
