Sean “Bad” Apple says a packed house at the Bad Apple Blues Club—seven years ago during a Jimmy “Duck” Holmes performance—showed him what he calls the closest feeling to heaven on earth. Growing up in Harvey’s Lake, Pennsylvania, Apple credits his early blues diet—Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skinnard, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix—for sparking obsession. But he wanted more than records, so in the 1990s he road-tripped through Mississippi, first landing in Bentonia. There, older musicians shared knowledge informally; Apple matched his guitar tuning by ear and replayed styles through immersion.
