Donald Trump Faces $5.8 Million Payout After Appeal Fails
Donald Trump is facing an immediate payment demand tied to a damages award connected to writer E. Jean Carroll after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review his appeal. Carroll’s attorneys filed in federal court in Manhattan seeking release of the nearly $5.8 million deposited by Trump in 2023 to cover the jury’s liability finding for sexual abuse and defamation. The motion states the total sought, including interest, is $5.77 million, and asks the judge to expedite briefing. The filing references the Supreme Court’s brief, unexplained order denying review, which left in place the verdict related to allegations tied to a New York City department store in the mid-1990s. Trump’s attorneys argued evidentiary rulings were “highly inflammatory,” including testimony from two other women who accused him decades earlier, allegations Trump denied. Carroll’s team said the related testimony was relevant and urged prompt resolution.
