Everyone is worried about AI killing jobs. She's testing a fix-it plan
Former Biden administration Commerce Secretary and Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo is unveiling a new effort aimed at preventing AI-driven job disruption and helping workers adapt. On Thursday, Raimondo announced Raise Us, a nonprofit described as a real-world laboratory to test policies that could “AI-proof” the U.S. workforce, with pilots planned across states, employers, and educational institutions. The project is backed by philanthropists including Melinda French Gates, Laurene Powell Jobs, and Stephen Schwarzman, and it also has support from major AI developers such as Amazon, Anthropic, Microsoft, and OpenAI’s nonprofit parent. Raimondo highlighted an initial pilot in Maryland expanding a Peace Corps-style service program to provide work experience, targeting young people who may be among the first affected. She argued a transition plan is essential, citing survey findings that many Americans believe AI will harm society.
