New AI tools have made it easier to build software, but Y Combinator is seeing fewer startups lead with mobile apps. Apple Inc.’s App Store saw new releases surge by about 80% earlier this year, as developers created “widgets” for areas like wellness and productivity. Yet among the world’s most prominent accelerators, the app share is steadily eroding. In the last spring batch, only eight of 195 startups had a native mobile app as their main product, down from roughly 15% in 2013 and about 4% between 2019 and 2022.
