North Korea tests new AI-equipped torpedo, KCNA says
North Korea test-fired an underwater, AI-equipped torpedo system on Thursday to verify technological upgrades, KCNA reported. The agency called the test a success and a “significant step” for naval development, saying propulsion technology was validated through more than 180 tests over the past five years. KCNA added that artificial intelligence was used for target detection and guidance in the new high-speed, precision-guided torpedo, which also showed improvements in propulsion efficiency and rocket propulsion performance. The launch adds to a sequence of North Korean weapons activities amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, as both Koreas develop weapons meant to evade missile defenses. The torpedo test followed Wednesday’s reported testing of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles.
