A recall of popular Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips has been classified by the FDA in its highest risk category due to potential salmonella contamination. The FDA designated the voluntary recall as a Class I action on July 1, warning that there is a “reasonable probability” that consuming or being exposed to the products could cause serious adverse health consequences or death. The recall began in May when Utz Quality Foods, a subsidiary of Utz Brands, responded after a seasoning made with dry milk powder from a third-party supplier could contain salmonella. Utz said seasoning batches tested negative before use, but it acted out of caution, and it reported receiving no illness reports linked to the affected chips. More than 650,000 bags are involved, sold nationwide, and consumers are instructed not to eat the products and retailers are told to remove them.
