Ruining the Whole Sport": Pat McAfee Takes a Dig at Critics Fuming Over His Shirtless On-Air Appearance

Pat McAfee reignited a social-media cycle of criticism after he appeared shirtless on ESPN’s College GameDay. During the show’s opening segment at the University of Utah ahead of the No. 10 Utes vs. No. 14 Houston Cougars, fans chanted for him to take off his shirt. McAfee initially resisted, then complied and faced backlash. He responded that he was “ruining the whole sport,” a comment tied to Jerry Brewer’s column in The Athletic questioning whether McAfee’s growing, disruptive presence was changing the program’s identity. McAfee later took further jabs during Saturday’s broadcast, ultimately removing his shirt again, with former Alabama coach Nick Saban joining in the moment.
