Russia-Linked Cyberattack Encrypts Hungary's EU Farm Subsidy Payment Agency

A ransomware-style cyberattack has encrypted files on employee computers at Hungary’s National Paying Agency (Nemzeti Kifizető Ügynökség), disrupting parts of its operations. The agency is responsible for distributing EU agricultural subsidies, and Hungarian technical experts traced the incident to Russian servers, according to an August 2, 2026 report by the independent outlet Telex and confirmation by the Magyar Államkincstár (Hungarian State Treasury). The target manages Hungary’s share of a five-year EU agricultural support plan worth EUR 10 billion total (about $10.7 billion). The National Cybersecurity Institute is investigating; no ransom demand has been publicly confirmed. The Treasury said no customer data was lost and client-facing data remained unaffected, pending verification by Hungary’s national data protection authority.
