Scrapped Stavley bypass raises concern over housing plans
xCruzo Brief
The UK government has scrapped plans for a bypass in Derbyshire, saying the proposal did not provide enough value for money to taxpayers. The Department for Transport (DfT) formally canceled the £197m Chesterfield–Staveley Regeneration Route, intended to improve connections between the two towns and make space for thousands of homes. Staveley town councillors now want Chesterfield Borough Council to pause additional housing projects until the bypass—first discussed in the 1950s—is redesigned and built. Councillor Paul Mann said Staveley Town Council, as a consultee, should object to future development due to inadequate road infrastructure. The DfT said it cut 16 schemes nationally but kept 16 others after benefit-cost review.
