A U.S. think tank says Taiwan should play a key role in a US-led effort to build an open and resilient artificial intelligence ecosystem as China expands its AI diplomacy. In a co-authored piece titled “How the US Can Counter China’s Emerging Tech Trap,” Patrick Cronin of the Hudson Institute and research associate Lai Pin-shan argue that Beijing’s approach could create a “technology trap” by exporting an entire AI stack. They point to Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 narrowing the gap with US models such as OpenAI and Anthropic and warn that the Belt and Road Initiative’s debt-trap model could evolve into deeper dependency through chips, cloud, standards, applications, training and governance. The authors highlight China’s World AI Cooperation Organization as a core vehicle.
