These hackers just pulled off history's biggest heist. Here's what you need to do now.
Binance said it was breached by hackers on Friday, October 30, in what TRM Labs and U.S. investigators tied to a North Korean-linked group known as TraderTraitor. The attackers reportedly stole $6.34 billion directly from users’ accounts in about 20 minutes, described as the biggest cryptocurrency heist in history. Binance temporarily disabled withdrawals to limit further losses and also paused deposits. By Saturday, it claimed 90% of lost assets were returned, and by Sunday withdrawals for certain coins resumed with a gradual rollout continuing into Monday. The incident appears to have started from a compromised laptop belonging to an engineer, suggesting a phishing scheme. Binance said internal access was targeted, making usernames, passwords, and seed phrases ineffective for securing accounts. Users were urged to check accounts and monitor for missing funds, with Binance promising automatic restoration without filing claims.
