Argentina's Milei plans bill to toughen sanctions against firms operating in Falklands

Argentine President Javier Milei is preparing legislation this week aimed at toughening sanctions against companies operating in the Falkland Islands, a move analysts say could widen tensions with Britain by applying pressure to other parts of the islands’ economy. The bill would build on Argentina’s existing sanctions proceedings targeting at least 60 companies and individuals linked to offshore oil exploration around the islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas. Milei’s 2027 budget proposal is due Tuesday, expected to increase defense spending. The effort follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments on reconsidering Washington’s neutral stance. Argentina also filed a criminal complaint last week tied to the Sea Lion project. Fugro said it was wrongly linked to Sea Lion and limited its work to a sub-sea cable.
