Trump's 250-foot arch could exact a toll on D.C. region's traffic, lawmaker says

Trump's plan to erect a 250-foot arch at the south end of Memorial Bridge would sit squarely in Memorial Circle, a traffic circle that handles more than 70,000 vehicles daily as commuters access the bridge and connect to George Washington Memorial Parkway and Northern Virginia roads. The Commission of Fine Arts gave the go-ahead last week, but final federal approvals remain pending. Harrison Design, the arch's firm, originally proposed a pedestrian tunnel; after the CMA rejected that idea, the firm proposed four pedestrian crossing points, and there are currently no traffic lights on Memorial Circle. Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) expressed grave concerns in a letter to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and NPS acting director Jessica Bowron, seeking transparency.
