President of Wisconsin's largest mosque released from ICE detention
The release of Salah Sarsour, president of Wisconsin’s largest mosque, highlights a U.S. court fight over whether his ICE detention violated free-speech protections. Sarsour, a 53-year-old Palestinian American detained in March, was freed Thursday after a federal judge, James Patrick Hanlon, said he had raised a “substantial” First Amendment retaliation claim. The Islamic Society of Milwaukee said he is a lawful permanent resident who has lived in the U.S. for over three decades and has no U.S. criminal record. He previously lost more than 30 pounds in detention, his legal team said, and he denied allegations tied to Molotov cocktails. The case continues, and the Trump administration has faced broader legal obstacles in crackdowns on pro-Palestinian voices.
