FAA clears proposed Trump arch, requires 'eternal flame' to alert pilots

The FAA said Friday that a proposed triumphal arch President Donald Trump wants to build near Arlington National Cemetery would not pose a hazard to aircraft, provided it is topped with an “eternal flame” and marked with light and floodlights visible to pilots. The determination clears an aviation hurdle ahead of the project meant to commemorate the U.S. 250th anniversary. The arch would be about 3,000 feet from Reagan Washington National Airport, within its main approach and departure corridor. Some experts previously raised safety concerns about its proximity and height requirements. The FAA rules can be reviewed if petitions are filed by Oct. 18.
