Federal investigators probe Amazon cargo jet's fiery runway crash that killed 5 in Miami

Investigators are examining the circumstances of Sunday’s runway overrun by an Amazon cargo jet at Miami International Airport that killed five people, with NTSB chairwoman Jennifer Homendy describing the scene as “utter devastation.” Homendy said the five deaths were inside a van carrying seven people from a cleaning company, while another vehicle outside airport property—a SUV—was struck. She did not specify how many were in the SUV or where the fatalities were located. The Boeing 767 traveled about 1,300 feet past the paved surface, according to Homendy, with torn fencing, navigational equipment, widespread debris and crushed vehicles. The flight from Cincinnati to Miami and then to San Juan, Puerto Rico, overran the runway around 2 p.m. after returning to Miami; officials said three others were critically injured and two hospitalized. Federal investigators will look at landing point, speed, braking, weather, wind, mechanical condition and whether investigators can confirm details from the flight data recorder.
