How Saab's 650-Engineer Team Just Outflanked Europe's FCAS Consortium With A Cheaper Combat Drone

Saab displayed a full-scale mock-up of its A3-001 uncrewed combat aircraft at the Jubilee Air Show in Linköping, Sweden, on Aug. 21–23, as Europe debates major future combat-air programs. Saab’s concept targets speed and lower cost compared with conventional fighters: an autonomous platform meant to operate alongside Saab’s JAS 39 Gripen E rather than replace a sixth-generation aircraft. Saab officials describe missions including electronic warfare, SEAD, and precision strike in contested environments, emphasizing low observability and autonomy. The aircraft could fly ahead of the Gripen E, with integrated sensors feeding data back.
