Moderate to severe turbulence was reported by multiple aircraft shortly before a fatal crash into Utah Lake near Provo Municipal Airport, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board. The incident occurred Aug. 7, just before 4 p.m., when student pilot Chase Riley Day, 25, and his flight instructor crashed shortly after takeoff. Day died, while the instructor suffered serious injuries. The NTSB report said preliminary air traffic control audio indicated that several aircraft operating in the vicinity reported the turbulence in the period before the accident. After a single-engine Textron Aviation Cessna 172 Skyhawk operated by ATP Flight School took off, the plane began a rapid descent within seconds. The debris field was about 100 feet, and Day was laid to rest Aug. 15.
