Retired pilot helps historical society buy Neil Armstrong's boyhood home for tours
A retired pilot, Ken Schreiber, has stepped in to help preserve Neil Armstrong’s boyhood home in Wapakoneta, Ohio, for public tours. The Auglaize County Historical Society will take ownership after Schreiber’s $400,000 donation, with the sale set to be finalized Monday. Schreiber, a former U.S. Air Force pilot who retired with American Airlines, said he made an offer after learning nobody had moved to save the property when it went on the market in August. The two-story home will be restored to its 1940s appearance, aiming to open it to visitors by 2030 for the 100th anniversary of Armstrong’s birth. The house at 601 W. Benton St. is where Armstrong built model planes, conducted experiments, took his first solo flight, and earned his pilot’s license at 16.
